- Short Bio
I have 13 years of experience in software development, the majority of which has been spent in a technical-lead role leading small teams of software developers through the hands-on execution of projects. I have worked in several industries including automotive, telecommunications, and insurance. Throughout my career, I have had experience with many of the practices of Agile including pair programming, test-driven development, and continuous integration before we really thought of ourselves as doing “Agile Development”. I have been practicing a more “comprehensive” Agile development approach (including PM practices - typically XP), for several years. In recent years, I have given presentations on Agile in many venues including: Agile 2008 Toronto, large groups (100+) at Travelers, Hartford Society for Information Managers (SIM), as well as several New England Universities. At Agile 2008 Toronto, my presentation was selected as one of a select few to be video taped and posted on InfoQ.com: http://www.infoq.com/presentations/Craftsmanship-Scott-Dillman
In my previous company, I was instrumental in a grassroots effort to bring Agile into our organization by gradually adopting Agile development practices into my development team. In my current position at Travelers, I work as an application architect. Some of my responsibilities in this role include:
- Helping project teams select the right development approach: Extreme Programming, Agile Unified Process, Hybrids
- Guiding the design of applications using Agile Modeling techniques
- Educating our developers on professional practices and standards such as test-driven development, continuous integration, pair programming best practices, code smells, refactoring patterns, object-oriented design principles, and design patterns
- Enhancing our approach through the use of appropriate tools, automated processes, metrics
- Expanding the knowledge and use of Agile in our organization
